All for one and one for all

The 18th October 2020 saw over 300 cyclists take on our first socially distanced cycling event, Pedal for Pounds.

Starting at Letchworth Hall Hotel, cyclists of all ages and abilities donned their lycra and took on 30 and 50 mile routes around the stunning local countryside of Hertfordshire, raising over £50,000 to support the care we provide for local people, like Heidi McNeill.

In December 2019, Heidi’s world turned upside down when she was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer at 49 years old.

“The Hospice has supported me right from the beginning of my diagnosis. My family and I went to the Hawthorne Centre for an assessment and immediately felt we’d come to the right place. From reflexology and talking through our next steps, to counselling and phone support, the Hospice family have to be the most professional and kindest people we have ever met, their dedication is second to none.”

In September 2020, Heidi found out that the cancer had spread to her brain and liver, and was diagnosed as terminal, with just a few short weeks left of her precious life. But no diagnosis could stop this tenacious lady, as she set herself a final challenge of taking part in Pedal for Pounds supported by her family, friends and a trusty rickshaw.

In the early hours of 16th October, two days before the event, Heidi passed away at home surrounded by her loved ones. Her friends and family came together and cycled in her memory carrying out Heidi’s dying wishes. The Hospice held a minute silence, before cheering Simon, Heidi’s partner, and the rickshaw support team over the start line.

Fellow riders joined in with the cheers and encouraged Heidi’s rickshaw team around the 30-mile course, with smiling faces from across the community clapping on their doorsteps in support of the team.

Simon said:

“We promised we would achieve her final wish and that is what we did. We know she was looking down on us with a big smile.

“Please, please, carry on supporting this amazing cause. I have seen first-hand the hard work and dedication the staff put in on a daily basis. We couldn’t have got through this without them.”
