About us
Garden House Hospice Care provides free specialist palliative care and wellbeing services for people living with life-limiting illnesses, as well as vital support for their families and careers. Our services make a lasting difference to people across North Hertfordshire, Stevenage and surrounding communities. We are supported by more than 200 staff and 800 volunteers, governed by a Board of Trustees with expertise spanning healthcare, commercial, legal and public-sector leadership.
The role
As a Trustee, you will play an important role in shaping the strategic direction, governance and long-term sustainability of the Hospice. Working alongside fellow Trustees, senior leaders, staff and volunteers, you will help ensure we continue to deliver high-quality, compassionate and person-centred care for those who need us most.
Trustees are required to attend four Board meetings and four sub-committee meetings per year, in addition to an annual strategy day. Trustees are appointed for a three year term of office, with the possibility of renewal for two further terms to a maximum of nine years.

Skills and experience
- Senior leadership experience in finance, compliance, fundraising, marketing and communications or a related field, gained at Senior Manager, Director or equivalent level
- A genuine commitment to the mission and values of Garden House Hospice Care and the charity sector
- Excellent communication and relationship building skills
- Strong strategic thinking and sound judgement
- Ability to work collaboratively with fellow Trustees, staff, volunteers and external stakeholders
- A willingness to contribute actively to the governance and future development of the Hospice
- Previous Trustee experience is not essential. We are interested in the skills, expertise, perspective and commitment you can bring to the Board.

Training and support
We are committed to ensuring all Trustees feel confident and supported in their role.
- This appointment is subject to a DBS check and completion of mandatory training
- You will receive an induction and ongoing professional development
- Support from fellow Trustees and the Executive Team
- This is a voluntary role, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed
- Access to our Volunteer Assistance Programme, providing free and confidential advice and support.
