Navigating through 2021 - April to June

The New Year is fast approaching but as 2021 draws to a close, we wanted to briefly look back and reflect on some of the brighter, more uplifting moments at the Hospice as we joined our patients, families, supporters and partners in navigating our way through the last 12 months.

Here we take a look at the second quarter of the year:

Monday 12th April saw a huge step forward in life returning to ‘normal’ as the high street reopened its doors to the public once again, including our 12 shops and Distribution Centre. It also saw the opening of Junior House, at The Oval in Stevenage, as our new dedicated children’s shop full of fashion, toys, games baby equipment and more at affordable prices.

We also provided an update on our urgent appeal, where we revealed that we had reached our target of £600,000 thanks to the incredible support of our community. Whilst our Chief Executive Sue Plummer took the opportunity to reflect on a year unlike any other and thank our supporters, she also issued a plea for the public not to forget us with their commitment to us and our patients needed more than ever.

May saw two important weeks in our calendar with Dementia Action Week and Dying Matters Awareness Week. The former allowed us to focus on raising awareness about dementia and the dementia care and support provided by our fantastic Admiral Nurse, Lucy. The theme of the latter, meanwhile, was making sure that you and your loved ones are #InAGoodPlacewhen you die and amongst several activities we held an Advanced Care Planning Q&A with our very own Dr Ros Marvin and Dr Sarah Bell, which saw questions submitted by the public.

With the country continuing to ‘open up’ and life return to normal, we also announced two family-friendly events for the summer – the return of our favourite Sunset Starlight Walk and the arrival of a new Fountain to Fountain Hike between Letchworth Garden City and Welwyn Garden City, in partnership with our friends at Isabel Hospice.

The first week of June saw us celebrate National Volunteers Week and thank our 785 incredible volunteers for their continued support. We shone a light on volunteers that have progressed to become full time employees at the Hospice, whilst also ensuring we recognised those who continued to volunteer during the pandemic, those who remained supportive even if shielding and other reasons prevented their usual support, our Compassionate Neighbours and our Trustees.

June also saw us launch our brand-new bridal boutique in Hitchin, Bridal House. Located above our Vintage House shop in Churchgate, Hitchin, Bridal House offers a personal experience to browse a vast collection of second-hand occasion wear for brides, bridesmaids, mothers of the bride and more, including individual dresses, evening and prom wear.

Also in June we announced the appointment of Steve Mellish as our new Chairman of Trustees. A Trustee at the Hospice since 2016, Steve stepped up from his previous position as Chairman of our Trading Board, which he had held since 2017. He follows in the steps of our previous Chairman, John Procter.

Thanks for looking back at the second part of our year. Our reflection of 2021 will continue later this week!
