New Letchworth shop opens

Bargain hunters in Letchworth Garden City have a new shop to explore after we unveiled our second presence in the town and our 13th across North Hertfordshire and beyond.

Our new shop on Leys Avenue opened its doors on Thursday with Day Services patient Colvin Cooper cutting the red ribbon to officially mark the occasion in front of an expectant crowd of keen shoppers and Hospice staff and supporters.

The shop will stock a wide range of quality pre-loved menswear, ladieswear, accessories, children’s wear, toys and games. Meanwhile our existing Letchworth shop on Eastcheap also reopened its doors on the same morning as our second Garden House and Home shop, specialising in a wide range of second-hand furniture, electricals, books and DVDs.

Colvin Cooper is a patient at the Hospice and was handed the honour of officially opening the shop:

“I’m a patient at the Nigel Hawthorne (Day Services) Centre and have been for many years. I use various services there such as the gym to help with my breathing. I also help with education projects and I go to the Compassionate Neighbours hub at Stevenage, to meet people who are lonely. I thoroughly enjoy it, I find the the whole system here brilliant and all the staff are easy to talk to and enjoy what they do.”

He added, “This new shop is magnificent. There’s so much in it, I’m completely lost. My wife is well at home!”

Carla Pilsworth, Director of Income Generation at the Hospice commented:

“We are delighted to have opened our second shop in Letchworth, which will offer an even better shopping experience for new and existing shoppers in the town. We had so many people visit us and the reaction of everyone we spoke to was extremely positive, with the overriding feedback being that the shop didn’t look or feel like a traditional charity shop, which is pleasing.”

“We rely on a third of our charitable income to be raised through our 13 charity shops and eBay store, so every penny that people spend will not only ensure you a great bargain but will help us to continue to care for local people.”

To further mark the opening, we hosted a ‘Letchworth takeover’ with various activities in the town throughout the day. This included a Compassionate Neighbours coffee morning and sofa sessions with our Admiral Nurse and Family Support Team. The Friends of Garden House Hospice Care were also in town, selling delicious cakes and promoting our Charlie Chick campaign, whilst the launch was also supported by a number of local businesses on the day, who put up posters, balloons and social media posts.

Garden House Hospice Care’s shop at 17-19 Leys Avenue, Letchworth Garden City, SG6 3EB is open 9am-5pm, Monday to Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sunday.
