Three year anniversary for Compassionate Neighbours project

Celebrations as we reach three years of matching local people volunteering their time to provide social and emotional support to hundreds of people across North Hertfordshire.

In its three years, this amazing project has seen 260 Compassionate Neighbours received training, offering support to 640 local people who are experiencing loneliness or social isolation. In addition, 350 matches have been made either on a 1:1 basis or by inviting a community member to attend one of our local Wellbeing Hubs.

In true lockdown style, the anniversary was marked with an afternoon Zoom tea party between Compassionate Neighbours, their community members, Hospice staff and partners. Compassionate Neighbours were invited to take part in a cake baking competition – won by John Wigglesworth with this outstanding cake below - with their cakes then delivered to their members the following day.

Jeanette Farrow is Compassionate Neighbours Project Manager at Garden House Hospice Care:

“As we mark our third anniversary, I would really like to thank the community for giving so much time to people that are lonely and socially isolated during Covid-19 and the various lockdowns. We have had a record number of volunteers training to become Compassionate Neighbours and everyone is so motivated, willing and eager to help anyone in their local community. It has been a privilege to work with so many kind and caring people and help so many others during these difficult times.”

The need across the region continues to grow, so we are in need of new Compassionate Neighbours to give an hour a week to support someone local to them. If you would like to get involved, we are holding our next set of online training sessions via Zoom on Tuesday 11th, Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th May 2021 (we ask that all three sessions are attended).
