It takes less than a minute for a doctor to hold someone’s hand while they talk to them, but that one, simple gesture changed everything for Jackie and her family.

Jackie was so poorly with an undiagnosed chronic bowel condition, she couldn’t undergo tests or treatment. She also had clots on her lungs and at one point had to be rushed to hospital with sepsis.

“Mum was so unwell, she was expected to die within days but thanks to the wonderful care, she actually picked up after a few days,” said her daughter, Ellie.

“All the staff were so caring and it was such a lovely environment, Mum didn’t want to leave.”

The extra touches that meant so much to Jackie and her family only take a minute or two. But the family think their beloved mum and grandmother, who was discharged to a care home, lived longer because of it. The impact will last forever.
