Lights of Life provides beautiful, uplifting experience

Thank you to everyone who participated in Lights of Life. We were overwhelmed by the number of stars that were dedicated - close to 800!

Our Christmas tree will remain lit throughout December and our stars hung with special messages, so if people still wish to dedicate a star to a loved one in the build-up to Christmas, you are more than welcome to join the hundreds of others who have already done so.

To those who visited our gardens to view the Lights of Life, light a candle and remember loved ones, we really hope your visit was a peaceful, moving and comforting experience. Our staff and volunteers loved talking to you all.

Here are just two quotes we received:

“Tonight my oldest daughter, aged 9, & myself came to see the tree. She wrote a star for her granny & we lit candles in her memory & hugged lots & had tears too. I felt so incredibly close to my mum tonight & that was a huge comfort to me, as I’m sure it will be for many who have lost loved ones. Huge thanks to all your amazing staff & volunteers for arranging this & giving up their time to think of others.”

“I brought a friend whose husband died in the Hospice some years ago and although she has always supported the Hospice she never felt able to come to the service. She wandered through with me today and wrote a star and lit a candle. A huge barrier broken. Thank you for all the hard work you have done. Beautiful, tranquil and uplifting.”

We also received an incredible £46,000 in donations. To put this in context, this could pay for more than 115 days of round-the-clock care on our Inpatient Unit or provide 1,730 hours of nursing in people’s own homes. We are awe-struck at the generosity we have seen and after a year that has seen our income devastated by the impact of the pandemic, the difference this funding makes cannot be underestimated.

A big thank you to our sponsors Arena Security Limited, Austin's Funeral Directors and North Hertfordshire District Council for their generous support and special mention to Smyle for their incredible work with filming and producing our virtual service, which you can find below.
