Hertfordshire has over 115,000 carers living amongst its population. Carers in Hertfordshire is a charity that gives free support and information to unpaid carers such as family and friends who look after someone that depends on them. Among the support provided are free workshops and training related to caring.
In January, Carers in Hertfordshire partnered with Garden House Hospice Care to deliver an essential Practical Carers course. The course was a result of a need identified following a focus group with carers earlier in 2016. Staff at the Hospice’s Hawthorne Centre, including a Nurse, Physiotherapist, Rehabilitation Assistant and Complementary Therapists facilitated and delivered the three-week pilot course to carers, mainly from north Hertfordshire.
The Practical Carers course included three sessions: Washing and Dressing someone with limited mobility, Moving & Handling and Hand Massage & Relaxation. Carers could attend standalone sessions if they wished however most participants attended all three sessions.
Jo Willis, Carers Development and Learning Manager at Carers in Hertfordshire said: “We have built a really positive relationship with the Garden House Hospice Care over the last 18 months, when they first supported us by hosting a Caring with Confidence Course that we delivered.
It’s a pleasure working with the Hospice, Abby McCarthy the Day Services Manager and the team. With their skills and knowledge, we have designed a course which we would definitely deliver again. We are delighted with the positive attendance and the feedback received.”
One positive participant who attended all three sessions said it really gave her confidence with the knowledge she gained. The course also gave her a short break from caring and an opportunity to meet other friendly carers in a similar situation.
Carers in Hertfordshire plan to approach other facilitators to deliver the course so more carers can have access to help and support.
